If there has been one constant in Star Wars, it’s the droids. In fact, our very first introduction to the fantasy world of Star Wars involved saga stalwarts C-3PO and R2-D2. Lucasfilm continued that tradition by giving us BB-8 in The Force Awakens. The diminutive ball droid became an instant favorite among old and new fans alike. I suppose it’s fitting that he may now be getting his very own sidekick.

Thus far through two films of the sequel trilogy, BB-8 has mostly interacted with humans or other sentient beings. Missing has been the banter to which we became so accustomed from Threepio and Artoo. He’s only had minimal interaction with R2-D2, but that time together was critical. The two droids combined to complete the map to Ahch-To, and to Luke Skywalker. Maybe it’s time though for BB-8 to have a true droid buddy of his own.

BB-8 to Get a Droid Buddy in Episode IX

Comicbook.com, compiling resources from Making Star Wars and Reddit, tells us that the new droid will be like a sidekick to BB-8. “It’s little and has sort of a cone-shaped head, kind of like a megaphone if you can imagine it.” Similarly, it would be like an “ugly duckling” treating the orange and white ball droid almost as a surrogate parent. The descriptions further indicate that the droid, rumored to be called Dio (D-O?) would interface with BB-8 somehow.

I’m all for BB-8 having a friend. I’m especially for it if talented illustrator Jake Lunt Davies, who recently wrapped art production for Star Wars: Episode IX, has anything to do with the droid. He did, after all, design BB-8. Perhaps his unused droid concepts will factor in this new sidekick.

What does all this mean for our beloved, bickering pair of C-3PO and R2-D2, however? Yes, the Skywalker saga is coming to an end. Let’s not forget that The Last Jedi left Artoo without his master in Luke Skywalker. Will the droid, arguably one of the most important characters in Star Wars thus far, save the galaxy once again? Or will he and his golden companion simply waddle off into the sunset? I supposed we’ll just have to wait to see what’s in store for them, and for BB-8 and his new buddy.

Star Wars: Episode IX opens December 20, 2019.
