It looks like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has another video game movie in the works. Johnson is no stranger to video game films with his previous roles in Doom and Rampage. In a recent interview with Men’s Journal, the actor offered no details other than there will be “an announcement this year”.

I’ve always been a big Madden fan. I can’t tell you which game in particular we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year. We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years. I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world. Of course we’re going to do right by our gamer friends—but really we’re just going to make a great movie.

WHAT VIDEO GAME IS JOHNSON HINTING AT?

My suspicion is that Madden will not be the video game brought to the screen. Given the action movie star power Johnson brings to a film, there is a potential that comes to mind.

Gears of War is a movie that has long been in development, by Universal Studios. Microsoft announced the partnership to develop a Gears of War film back in 2016. Johnson also has a long history of working with Universal Studios from his first major film The Scorpion King and his more recent involvement in the Fast and Furious franchise. This makes Gears of Wars seem like a logical fit for the actor.

Of course, it’s also very possible, this will be a completely new project that no one will be expecting. Time will tell when the announcement is officially made later this year.
