Kamikaze, HBOMax’s first Danish language original series, takes you on a melancholy journey of rising from the ashes of grief.

WARNING: Kamikaze deals with death and suicide on multiple levels

WHAT IS KAMIKAZE?

Adapted from the book Muleum by Erlend Loe, Kamikaze tells the story of an 18-year-old Julie whose family dies in a plane crash. Determined to end her life in a similar way, the series opens as Julie attempts suicide by crashing a small plane in the desert.

The series is told through a stream of flashbacks. Before the tragedy of her family’s death, Julie seems to have a perfect life. She has a loving family, lives in a seaside mansion, has fantastic friends, and has an unlimited supply of money. However, after the tragedy Julie’s death wish becomes unbearable for all, forcing herself into isolation with a random fling here and there.

MARIE RUTHERFORD IS A FORCE

Marie Rutherford takes on the role of Julie with masterful ease; it’s hard to believe she doesn’t have decades of experience behind her. Her performance isn’t over-the-top, it’s pure, honest, and you can’t take your eyes off of her. Throughout her character’s journey, the stages of grief are palpable, but you can always catch the smallest glimmer of hope through her darkness.

LOST IN THE EDIT

I enjoyed the juxtaposition of storytelling in Kamikaze. From the present-day Julie having crashed landed in the desert to fresh off the tragedy Julie. However, I do wish we had a little more backstory from before her family was gone. I would have loved to see them together, more connection with the friend group. Yes, I can relate and make it work with the little bit given, but it’s the bare minimum vs what could actually do.

I also found myself lost in the editing from time to time. When Julie is in the desert the image cuts from her handheld camera documenting her story as she slowly withers away, to the normal single camera, back to the flashback. So, I found myself confused as to where I was in the story every once in a while.

Overall, I found this Kamikaze enjoyable. If it’s something you’re interested in, give it a try, but definitely grab some tissues.
