On the hunt for the next successful, epic fantasy series a la Game of Thrones comes The Wheel of Time from Amazon Prime.
The Wheel of Time is a wildly successful series of fantasy novels by author Robert Jordan, with Brandon Sanderson as co-author for the final 3. The book series was originally supposed to only be a 6 book series. However, The Wheel of Time now spans 14 volumes, in addition to a prequel novel and two companion books. That is more than Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings combined!
Adapting a fantasy for film or television can be a daunting task. The creatives behind The Wheel of Time have the challenge of being true to the source material when building this fantasy world, as well as keeping original fans happy – while also gaining new ones.
The Wheel of Time follows the journey of a powerful woman named Moiraine (Rosamund Pike). Along with 5 young people, they all journey to come into their power and destroy the “Dark One”. Part of this world-building comes from picking the right people to play these incredible characters. That’s where Josha Stradowski as Rand, Madeleine Madden as Edqene al’Vere, Zoe Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, and Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara come in.
I had a chance to chat with this incredible cast about what makes the show so special. And what it feels like to possibly be a part of the next big thing!
The Wheel of Time premieres with the first 3 episodes on Amazon Prime on November 19th, with the following episodes released on a weekly basis through December. Season 2 is already confirmed and in production.
