The beloved lasagna-loving cat is coming back to life after two live-action films; in Sony and Alcon Entertainment’s new animated film Garfield. Who will be voicing him, you may ask? The one-and-only Chris Pratt; who broke the internet last month when it was announced he would be playing Mario. As far as Garfield, we don’t know much about the film’s synopsis. However, the original newspaper serial came with the announcement:
Garfield, who is a fat, lazy, orange cat who loves lasagna and hates Mondays. He lives with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and a drooling dog called Odie. He is an expert manipulator, and his infinite appetite gets him and Jon into all sorts of trouble.
The new animated movie will be written by Oscar nominee David Reynolds (Finding Nemo). And it will be directed by Mark Dindal, who is behind Disney’s Chicken Little… but, also worked with Reynolds on the classic Emperor’s New Groove, as well. Created in 1978 by Jim Davis, Garfield holds the record as the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world.
DNEG Animation, who just released the surprisingly charming Ron’s Gone Wrong, will produce and animate the film. Alcon acquired the rights from Davis, who will serve as an executive producer on the film along with Bridget McMeel from Amuse and Craig Sost, John Cohen, and Steven P. Wegner.
CHRIS PRATT IN ANOTHER NEW BELOVED IP ANIMATED FILM?
The news of Pratt playing Mario in Illumination’s new movie left many people were left scratching their heads. Only time will tell if the performer who plays Peter Quill will be able to capture the magic of Nintendo’s timeless character… But, as for Garfield, I believe that Pratt has the right gravitas to bring this particular character to life. Bill Murray, originally voiced Garfield in the two live-action films, and while he was a great casting choice; they were both critically panned. Hopefully, the creative team behind The Emperor’s New Groove can bring new life to this property.
What are your thoughts on Chris Pratt as Garfield? Are you looking forward to a new iteration of this character?
