Did anyone think The Rocketeer would ever get a sequel/reboot? Neither did I, but it’s happening, and it’s going to be on Disney+ to boot. At least, for those with the money to pay for premiere access, that is.

Art deco for the win.

Deadline reported that Disney is now intent on making a sequel/reboot of their 1991 classic period superhero film The Rocketeer. This new film has the creative title of The Return of the Rocketeer. British husband and wife team David and Jessica Oleweyo will produce this film under their Yoruba Saxon company. Brigham Taylor will also co-produce the film with Yoruba Saxon.

Not the most creative company name, but it will do.

Meanwhile, Edward Ricourt will write the screenplay for The Return of the Rocketeer. He originally wrote for Now You See Me, Jessica Jones, and Raising Dion. Most of those series managed to get positive (or at least mixed) reviews from critics, so this could be a good one.

Unfortunately, that’s it as far as official information about The Return of the Rocketeer. We have no word of any cast members. We don’t even have any word of a release date for you. All we know about release details is that it’s going to be a live-action film and that it will premiere on Disney+. We will just have to wait for more news from Disney later.

The Return of the Rocketeer: Details

You can tell this trailer is from 1991 from the 480p resolution.

Aside from a few production details and absolutely zero release details, we do have some details of the plot for The Return of the Rocketeer. Apparently, the story will not feature the protagonist of the original The Rocketeer. This time, we’ll get a new hero. Also according to Deadline, the story will focus “on a retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the Rocketeer mantle”. That single sentence is all you’re getting for today though. Savor it as a teaser for when we finally get more details later.

Conclusion

The period superhero cult classic The Rocketeer will make a comeback on Disney+ in the form of The Return of the Rocketeer. David and Jessica Oleweyo of Yoruba Saxon will produce the film alongside Brigham Taylor, while Edward Ricourt will write the screenplay for it. We don’t know when it will come out, or who will play in it though. We’ll just have to wait for more info from Disney later.
