DC seems to be expanding their film slate to include Black Canary. According to Cinelinx, the new film is written by Misha Green. Collider had the report that it would be a feature film and not a series. Jurnee Smollett first showed up as the character in 2020’s Birds of Prey. She’s on board to reprise her role as Dinah Lance in this upcoming solo film that’s likely heading to HBO Max in their new content path for certain DC films. Sue Kroll will produce the film, who also helped produce Birds of Prey.
The project is still pretty far off in the distance however. So temper your hype a little bit. Smollett and Green both previously worked together on Lovecraft Country, which was cancelled by HBO after one season. In addition to Black Canary, HBO Max and DC are teaming up for films based on Blue Beetle, Batgirl, and a Black Superman series. It’s part of their new push to drive subscribers to HBO Max and get original DC content out to the fans.
It’s an interesting push that could have good results as these characters might not resonate with large-scale releases, but the pressure is off for them to pull in big box office numbers when they go straight to HBO Max. Either way, this is exciting news for fans of Birds of Prey. That film was one of the last big releases before the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world.
