Despite the fact that only House of the Dragon actually seems to be making progress towards becoming a real show, HBO keeps planning new forays into the Game of Thrones universe.
Today The Hollywood Reporter announced HBO Max is now planning to develop two additional animated shows in the GOT world. This follows a previous announcement of an animated series in development earlier this year. (So for those keeping count, that’s at least three potential animated Thrones shows.)
The double dose animation announcement also came with a retraction. One of the previously planned live-action prequels, Flea Bottom, will no longer move forward. The series would have explored life in the infamous King’s Landing slum.
As for what you can expect from the animated projects, details are scarce. THR reports at least one of the three projects will explore a new territory, Yi Ti. The Golden Empire, based loosely on imperial China, exists in the south-eastern limits of Essos. Creator George R.R. Martin describes Yi Ti as one of the oldest and most advanced societies in the Game of Thrones universe. Yi Ti only scored a brief mention in GOT, so it’s largely uncharted territory for the franchise.
All of these projects have yet to receive official confirmation from HBO, however. At this time, the only GOT series confirmed to make it all the way to our screens is House of the Dragon. House of the Dragon tells the story of House Targaryen, specifically focusing on the Targaryen Civil War. The series stars Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith as Targaryen royals Rhaenyra and Daemon. Production is underway, with the show set to premiere sometime in 2022.
