With the recent news that Lucasfilm is considering development of an Inquisitors show for Disney+, we thought what better time than now to revive our exclusive fan fiction series, I Inquisitor!

It’s admittedly been some time since our last installment, so we encourage you to refresh your memory or catch up with the story by visiting the links below:

I, Inquisitor follows the tale of Tavek Dinaar. The story chronicles his rise through the ranks of the Imperial Inquisitorius… And his ultimate fall from Darth Vader’s graces. In Part 8, we learned the shocking secret that Obi-Wan Kenobi had a child with Satine Kryze. Now, Dinaar confesses to Senator Bail Organa what transpires during Dinaar’s desperate search for Kenobi’s offspring….

I, Inquisitor, Part 9: Revelation

Bail Organa hadn’t realized he’d stood in anxious anticipation of what the Inquistor would reveal until his knees weakened and he fell back into his chair.

“This cannot be,” he muttered to himself in disbelief. The Senator’s mind reeled as it immediately drew him back to his last encounter with Obi-Wan Kenobi. It was a similar, startling revelation that had brought the two together for the last time. Anakin Skywalker, Republic General and member of the Jedi Council, had turned to the Dark Side. In doing so, he’d contributed to the death of Organa’s fellow Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo. Worst still, Organa, Kenobi and Master Yoda shouldered the burden of hiding Anakin’s relationship with Padmé and protecting Anakin’s forbidden offspring. Now the senator’s usually stoic resolve faltered to the point of collapse. Not only had Anakin broken his Jedi vows to produce heirs, so too had Kenobi.

“I don’t believe it. This must be some kind of trick,” Organa said aloud as he rose and paced his office. “The message must be a ruse. A tool to slice my communications should I contact Kenobi. Winter!” Organa shouted into his com.  His silver-haired aide appeared immediately.

“Yes, Senator?”

“Have you scanned this transmission for any irregularities?” he asked. He knew the answer before the words left his aide’s lips.

“Of course, Senator. There were no anomalies. The message was genuine, and clean.”

Organa nodded somberly once, then twice more emphatically. Winter took her cue and exited the office as quietly and swiftly as she’d entered. The beleaguered Senator held his hand to his chin and pondered. Thus far, he found nothing about the Inquisitor to be disingenuous. His voice was devoid of the tone and inflection so often harmonized with deception. Tavek Dinaar, the one-time Jedi padawan from Alderaan, was telling the truth.

Organa felt it in his bones.

He sat back down and reengaged the recording. Earlier in the message Dinaar had foretold of his telling of the many atrocities he’d committed in the name of the Empire. Organa had paused the transmission following the starting revelation that Obi-Wan Kenobi, Stalwart of the Jedi Order, had produced a daughter with Satine Kryze. When the Inquisitor continued, however, it became clear that finding Kenobi’s child would be no easy feat.

What the Senator heard next turned his stomach. Across the galaxy Vader’s minion searched. For years. So important was his task that Vader himself ensured he’d have every resource the Empire could offer in carrying it out. Ships. Informants. When necessary, even his own contingency of Purge Troopers. Darth Vader became so desperate to find the offspring of Obi-Wan Kenobi that he’d even authorized his Inquisitor to utilize bounty hunters. Tavek Dinaaar had forgotten their names. There was a Trandoshian, and a blue-skinned non-human whose race he’d also failed to remember.

Over a decade passed as the agent of evil traversed all known space, and even into the Unknown Regions. Still, his search was fruitless. Whatever network the Mandalorian Duchess had employed to hide the heir to Obi-Wan Kenobi had succeed in concealing the child from any who would seek her. That did not stop Dinaar, however, from seeking nonetheless. He’d slaughtered an entire vessel full of Aqualish on Trask when rumor told him they’d once transported Kenobi’s heir. He’d even returned to Ryloth, where his journey as an Inquisitor had begun.

There he committed perhaps one of his worst atrocities.

As rumblings of a rebel alliance grew, it began clear that one or more cells centered themselves on the Twi’lek home world. As Organa knew, Obi-Wan and Jedi Master Mace Windu led a major Republic offensive there to free the planet from a Separatist blockade. The Inquisitor knew the Twi’leks sympathized with the rebel cause, and owed a debt to Kenobi’s heroics. In the same village where Kenobi thwarted the Separatists’ plans for planetary defense, he again employed the same tactics he used on Shilii to try and draw the Jedi out… Only this time to far more torturous ends.

The Twi’lek he’d captured had known and fought with Kenobi. Dinaar strung him up by his lekku, a fate heinous enough on its own for Twi’lek. To prompt the captive to talk, he added weight tied to the yellow-skinned alien’s ankles. It wasn’t until he sliced the Twi’lek’s torso with the spinning edge of the double-bladed saber he’d inherited from Third Sister that he’d finally gotten the breakthrough he’d sought for so long. Through the alien’s wails, the Inquisitor learned that Kenobi’s heir had been to Ryloth….

And better yet, he now had confirmation of their whereabouts.

Bail Organa paused the recording to wipe the tears that fell from the Senator’s eyes. The saltiness stung further when he started the recording again and realized yet another, agonizingly horrific certainty:

There truly would be no redeeming this Inquisitor.

“You see, Senator, pain and death bring about a poetic truth. The weak cannot lie. Not in the face of agony. Anguish and suffering became two of the most useful tools an Inquisitor could employ. I wielded them, ashamedly, now, to aplomb. This Twi’lek, writhing as its blood ran like rivers to the dusty earth below, bellowed its confession.

Instances of my surprise seldom occurred during my time in the Inquisitorius. So believe when I tell you that the information I learned from the suffering Twi’lek sent shockwaves through my connection to the Force. The last words he spoke before giving way to death were the catalyst to my descent into self-doubt. If what he said was true, and as I said before, the truth in death is indeed poetic, then everything I learned on Mandalore all those years prior was the true deception.

Listen to my words here carefully, Senator. I tell you now that I was unnerved by what I discovered that day on Ryloth. Even now I question how what the Twi’lek told me could be possible, thought I know it to be true. Are you familiar with the term dyad in the Force, Senator? I suppose not.

Few beyond an Inqusitor or Sith have ever known of such a phenomenon’s existence.

It is a connection through the Force between two beings. The two, via the dyad, become one, combining their strength and power in the Force as if one being. The bond between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Satine Kryze did not rise to the level of dyad… but mirrored the strength of a dyad in many respects. Now, as I reflect on what I felt that day I entered the tombs below Mandalore’s surface, I realize the power of the betrothal they shared. I recognize it, but cannot explain it.

There is no data anywhere in any official archive, Imperial or Mandalorian, to suggest that the Duchess was in any way Force sensitive. Notwithstanding, I believe now, with every part of me, that she was nonetheless able to draw upon Kenobi’s connection with the Force to orchestrate perhaps one of the most complete duplicities I’ve ever witnessed.

As it would be, the heir of Kenobi had never hidden at all. At least neither overtly, nor purposely, until these recent years. Yet, hidden Satine Kryze’s child remained, to me as an Inquisitor, to Darth Vader, and seemingly even to the Force itself.

Now that I knew the truth, I questioned all else I’d ever known.

Stunned, I returned first to my TIE fighter and then to the Star Destroyer Maelstrom, the Anlace’s more modern, Imperial replacement. I speak to no one save to instruct the Maelstrom’s captain to set course for the salt world of Crait. The remainder of the journey I spent in solitude, meditating on the events that transpired on Ryloth. Even the tortured Twi’lek couldn’t contemplate the gravity of what he’d revealed. Couldn’t, because what he’d revealed, unknowingly remained a secret even to him.

I’m sure that at this point, Senator, the words I speak grow increasingly confusing to you. Understandable. Even I, with all my power as an Inquisitor, still cannot comprehend all I’ve come to discover. Know this, Senator Organa: My time grows short. With my final words I will reveal to you, and to you alone, that which few could possibly fathom….

(To be concluded in the tenth and final installment of I, Inquisitor!)
