After Disney+ announced WandaVision would premiere in January 2021 instead of this December, it solidified 2020 as the first year without a Marvel screen debut in a decade.
But Marvel wants fans to remain hopeful that 2021 will be their year. Marvel Studios producer Victoria Alonso recently confirmed in an interview with Clarín that Loki doesn’t have too much left to film.
While the pandemic delayed production on the series, Alonso said she estimates Loki only needs four or five weeks more of filming. So while Disney confirmed WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier for 2021, we may also get Loki next year too.
Alonso also described working during the pandemic as “frustrating” and “an exercise in patience.”
Will Marvel Films Release on Disney+?
With the ongoing pandemic and movie theater closures, many theatrical releases have shifted to streaming debuts instead.
Disney released Mulan to Disney+ (for an additional price) and will drop the Pixar animated flick Soul next month (free to general subscribers). But will the company send its Marvel films to a streaming debut too?
Alonso doesn’t think this is likely for MCU films.
The producer said she believes in the community experience of watching a movie in a theater, and that certain films – like the MCU ones – deserve to be experienced that way.
Currently, the next MCU film slated to debut in theaters is Black Widow in May of 2021. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals are also scheduled for 2021. (Of course, 2020 has proven these future dates are pretty hard to guarantee.)
