AMC’s long-running series The Walking Dead will end with season 11, but the undead will go on. The network announced not one, but two new zombified spinoffs today.
Check out the details for the spinoffs below, as well as news about the final season of The Walking Dead.
TWD Daryl & Carol Spinoff
TWD fans will be excited to hear one of the spinoffs ordered features familiar faces. Long-time best friends Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) will get their own series.
We don’t have many details yet about the so far untitled spinoff. Is this a prequel? Or will it follow the events of the main series? (If the latter is the case, I guess we can assume they both survive TWD season 11.)
“Daryl’s relationship with Carol has always been my favorite relationship on the show (sorry Rick),” Reedus said in a statement. “I love the way these characters interact and relate to each other on so many levels and can’t wait to see where their ride goes from here.”
McBride similarly expressed her excitement to continue working with Reedus.
“Of course, I’ve always enjoyed working so closely with Norman throughout these many seasons,” said McBride. “In playing Carol, and as a viewer of the show, I’ve also long been intrigued with ‘Daryl and Carol,’ and by what so early on between them, even then, felt somehow bound. Their shared history is long, and each’s own personal fight to survive, even longer — the more obvious aspect of what has kept them close and loyal. But there is also a rather mysterious aspect to their fondness for one another that I enjoy, and their playfulness when the world permits.”
Tales of the Walking Dead Spinoff
In addition to the Daryl & Carol-centric series, TWD universe will see new faces go up against the dead. AMC also set Tales of the Walking Dead, an episodic anthology series.
This spinoff set in the Walking Dead universe will follow a new set of characters in each episode. Again, we don’t have many details about the series yet. But TWD head Scott Gimple hinted that we may revisit some familiar faces here too. Gimple said the show will involve “new or existing characters, backstories or other stand-alone experiences.”
The Walking Dead Final Season
Though COVID-19 delayed production on The Walking Dead, the show will return to our TV screens in October.
The originally planned season 10 finale will now air as a special episode October 4. During Comic-Con, AMC announced plans to expand the season an additional 10 episodes. These will air in 2021. Then, the 11th and final season will air 24 episodes over a two-year period, ending in 2022.
