Alas, anyone who has been watching the news for the past couple of weeks will be fully aware of what Trump has been doing to the United States in that time. In particular: his attacks on anything even remotely resembling Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies. Not just in business, mind you, but anywhere and everywhere.
As you might expect, this includes mainstream media like the superhero films DC Studios makes. As you might also expect: James Gunn is a part of that, not least of which because he’s one of the two chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios. Thus, it’s inevitable that someone would ask him about what President Trump has been doing about DEI.
As it turns out: James Gunn is deciding to plead ignorance to the whole dark debacle. Even in spite of Variety pointing out that any kind of public comment in favor of DEI (or even against Trump) could kill the marketing campaign for his upcoming Superman movie before it can even begin. Gunn appears to be trying to play the fool, insisting that he hasn’t been paying attention to the news or social media lately. Mostly for his own mental health, which is something we can all agree with. Gunn’s exact words on the subject of DEI are:
I know what you’re saying. I understand your words, but I’ve been off working on stories for three years, and I just try to tell the best stories I possibly can, and that’s all I care about.
We’re just off trying to make the best movies we can in the best way we can. No matter who is telling me who I’m supposed to put in my movie, for whatever reason, I don’t give a shit. I was always about creating the best story possible with the best characters possible. It was that way, you know, five years ago, and it’s that way today.
James Gunn Pleads Ignorance To DEI Questions
Is James Gunn really pleading ignorance to the whole DEI debacle? To be fair, politics these days are enough to make a sane person want to forget they ever existed. It wouldn’t be out of the question that Gunn simply doesn’t want to read about the next bit of political news. Or are his words a tongue-in-cheek criticism without saying anything overtly direct?
