We are officially getting a live-action Masters of the Universe movie based on the classic ’80s toy line from Mattel. The latest casting news for the film is that James Purefoy and Charlotte Riley are joining the film as King Randor and Queen Marlena. THR had the exclusive report.

Travis Knight is directing the upcoming film, slated for release in on June 5th, 2026. Purefoy and Riley are joining an already stacked cast that also includes  Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, Morena Baccarin asThe Sorceress and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops.

As for plot details, they’re a bit under wraps, but you can assume that it’ll see Skeletor and He-Man doing battle for the fate of Eternia. The 1980s toy line and cartoon saw Castle Grayskull as the target of numerous attacks by Skeletor, Hordak and the Snake Men, all of whom believe the secrets inside will allow them to conquer Eternia and the entire universe, thus becoming the Masters of the Universe. The castle is instrumental in the transformation of He-Man.

In The Masters of the Universe lore, King Randor and Queen Marlena are Adam’s parents. They also have no idea that their son turns into the heroic He-Man and goes off with his buddies to fight Skeletor. Shows just how good of parents they are. The script for the film comes from Chris Butler, David Callaham, and Aaron and Adam Nee.

James Purefoy is an English actor who’s starred in projects like HBO’s Rome, The Following, and most recently was in Hulu’s The Veil. Charlotte Riley is also English, and she’s made appearances in films like London Has Fallen, The Edge of Darkness, and the TV series Peaky Blinders.

We’ll have to see how the new live-action movie turns out. It’s been a tumultuous time for Mattel and their properties including Masters of the Universe.
