The Forbidden Kingdom is a rather unique take in the wuxia film genre. A genre which is defined by Chinese martial arts galore, as well as CGI magic attacks for quite a few of them. Such films also tend to follow Chinese folklore, which this counts as. Journey to the West is a novel that came to us all the way from 16th century China, and is what heavily inspires this particular wuxia film. The fact that we don’t even know its exact publishing date should tell you just how old that book is.

The thing that makes The Forbidden Kingdom stand out from the other wuxia films is the cast. The film stars both Jackie Chan and Jet Li, who are both big names in the martial arts movies. For entirely different reasons, of course, but that’s beside the point. The other star of the film is…a Western teen? Played by Michael Angarano, no less. What’s the story behind that, you might ask? Well, we’ll just have to find out when the film journeys to home video soon.
