Ghost Cat Anzu is one of the most unique anime films in a long while. Mostly because of the way this French-Japanese anime film adaptation of the manga of the same name by Takashi Imashiro does its animation. Apparently, production companies Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions filmed all the scenes in live-action, and only then used rotoscoping to trace the scenes into animation. As you can imagine: it’s a lot of work to animate this way compared to traditional hand-drawing. However, the result can be some incredibly fluid animation, which this anime film achieves in no uncertain terms.
Thus, it’s no wonder why GKIDS has their eyes on Ghost Cat Anzu. So much so that they are in the process of bringing this anime film to home video as we speak. Don’t believe me? Then let’s find out more about this impending home video release together, shall we?
Ghost Cat Anzu: Home Video Details
GKIDS is proud to announce that they are busy bringing the Japanese-French anime film Ghost Cat Anzu to home video. A home video release that is taking place nearly 8 months after its initial debut at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival, nearly 6 months after its Japanese debut, and nearly 2 months after its NA debut. A home video release that comes with a number of bonus features, including teasers and trailers.
This impending home video release of Ghost Cat Anzu will consist of a digital only release, and then followed immediately by a Blu-ray release. GKIDS will make this anime film available for digital download on all digital platforms, including Amazon, Apple, Google, Fandango, Microsoft, and iNDEMAND, on January 28, 2025. Meanwhile, the Blu-ray release of the same will release on March 4, 2025. Although it’s not out yet, you can still preorder the Blu-ray directly from GKIDS.
Bonus: Trailer and Synopsis
That’s not all, folks! GKIDS also has an official synopsis for Ghost Cat Anzu to tease the story a bit. You can check it out below:
Precocious tween Karin finds herself abandoned by her father in rural Japan. Living in a temple with her grandfather, she meets Anzu, a giant “ghost cat” and notorious layabout tasked with looking after her. Distrustful of her new guardian, Karin sabotages Anzu’s odd jobs for the townsfolk and befriends the eccentric local forest spirits. In an effort to win Karin over, Anzu accidentally makes a deal with the devil, and all Hell breaks loose.
Ghost Cat Anzu is co-directed by renowned artist Yoko Kuno, who makes her feature directorial debut, and Nobuhiro Yamashita, the acclaimed director of Linda Linda Linda. Co-produced by Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions with music by legendary musician Keiichi Suzuki (EarthBound), Ghost Cat Anzu is a wildly funny ride in the countryside.
