The holiday box office was electrified this weekend as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sped to the top spot with an impressive $38 million this weekend; according to Box Office Mojo. Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King roared into second place with $37.1 million. While the prequel to the 2019 live-action The Lion King dazzled audiences with its stunning visuals, and nostalgic ties to the original. It fell just shy of taking the top spot. With strong holiday attendance, it’s one of the rare instances this year where a movie increases its box office from its previous week; with the movie seeing a 4.8% increase over the previous week.

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu debuted to a solid $21.15 million, landing in third place. The gothic horror reimagining of the silent-era classic found its audience among genre fans. Along with those seeking counter-programming to the family-friendly fare dominating the top of the charts. The movie performed better than predicted. With critical acclaim and strong word-of-mouth, the film is poised to hold well in the coming weeks.

Universal’s Wicked, took fourth place with $19.45 million. Meanwhile, Disney’s Moana 2 secured fifth place with $18.2 million. Both movies still draw steady crowds, and both saw a modest increase at the box office. With Wicked seeing a 37.4% increase over the previous week, and Moana 2 seeing a 37.8% increase.
