Capcom has confirmed that the next game in its blockbuster video game franchise is Resident Evil 9. The game has a lot of rumours and there’s lots of speculation as to what could show up. That said, here are some things we’d like to see in the next installment of Resident Evil.
Bring Back The Third-Person Perspective (But Don’t Abandon First-Person)
The last mainline games in the Resident Evil series (Resident Evil VII and Resident Evil Village) abandoned the typical third-person perspective for a first-person perspective. I’m not going to say the perspective was my favourite, but with rumours that Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine are returning as protagonists. It makes sense to put the game in third-person and show off updated models from what we last saw of them in Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4.
I think if Capcom was smart though, they’d maybe add a segment or two in the first-person perspective. Similar to the Ada segments in Resident Evil 2 or the Carlos sections in Resident Evil 3. The game likes to shake up the game and putting in some first-person perspectives could help ramp up the terror while not having the game feel like a complete shooter all the time.
Bring Back Fan Favourite Characters
The Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) is a prominent force that has many prominent members. Their appearance in recent games will almost assuredly continue with Resident Evil 9.
The BSAA is a huge organization and while we know that characters like Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine are members; there’s also some room to bring back more characters.
If Jill is back in Resident Evil 9 then it makes sense that she would bring back Carlos from Resident Evil 3. He got a glow-up in the remake and appeared more like an amalgam of Keanu Reeves from Point Break and Speed but he has been noticeably absent from the franchise since his appearance in Resident Evil 3. Carlos took on the Nemesis with Jill, I think he has more than enough credentials to join the BSAA.
Then there’s Hunk. Yes, he’s more of a meme than a character at this point. However, with his notoriety as the ‘Grim Reaper’ it would be criminal to not have Hunk be a BSAA operator. At the very least, bring back a mini-game unlockable at the end where you can play as the super-powerful mercenary.
Ada Wong was supposed to have an appearance in Resident Evil: Village but never actually showed up. With Leon back, you can rest assured she can’t be too far behind.
Then there’s Wesker. Yes, he supposedly died in a volcano at the end of Resident Evil 5 but can a volcano keep a good man down? No. It would be a great reveal to show that he’s still alive and pulling the strings. There’s also the fact that before you beat him in Resident Evil 5 there’s a segment in a cloning facility. So there’s always a chance that he was cloned, or the version you killed was a clone.
Two Resident Evil Scenarios
If the rumors are correct, the main characters will be Jill and Leon.
One thing noticeably absent from recent Resident Evil games is the idea of two scenarios. In Resident Evil you could play as Jill or Chris, and in Resident Evil 2 you could play as Leon or Claire. In the latter’s remake, there were noticeable differences between the campaigns and you were encouraged to play more than one scenario to not only see everything, but to unlock everything.
I think having Jill and Leon with their own campaigns would make things interesting. You can keep many story beats the same and put in some variations. That will turn it from a 5-6 hour game into a 10-12 hour game easily.
The Resident Evil 9 Plot
So in Resident Evil VII and Village, it was shown that Chris had discovered that the BSAA is using Zombies as soldiers. Which rubs him the wrong way. From what we can tell, Chris is ready to go against the BSAA.
There’s also the connection between Mother Miranda and Umbrella’s president, Oswell E. Spencer. In Resident Evil: Village there’s a lot of evidence pointing to Miranda’s teachings inspiring Spencer and ultimately leading to his developing the T-virus.
Undoubtedly, all of this connects. Is Oswell E. Spencer still alive and secretly running the BSAA? Is the BSAA functioning as a new version of Umbrella?
Undoubtedly, Resident Evil 9 will answer a lot of these, if not all.
That’s what we want to see from Resident Evil 9 but what do you want to see? Let us know in the comments below.
