Deadpool & Wolverine Reclaims The Top Spot At The Weekend Box Office

Deadpool & Wolverine must have a regenerative healing factor as the movie has bounced back to the number one spot; after Alien: Romulus took the spot last week.

Deadpool & Wolverine Claws Its Way Back To The Top

According to Box Office Mojo, Deadpool & Wolverine was the number one movie this weekend with $18 million. Despite it being the 5th week the movie has been in theatres. Despite losing placement in 120 theatres; and a 39% drop in its box office revenue from last week. The film endured to be number one.

Keeping in mind that this weekend’s box office was on the lower end. We’ve had some pretty big earning weekends lately but this wasn’t one of them. So while Deadpool & Wolverine was the winner at the box office. Theatres as a whole suffered and failed to find an audience.

Alien: Romulus saw a noticeable drop at the box office over its debut last week with the movie dropping 61% over its debut; it placed second with $16 million . A staggeringly high drop-off for a movie that had a strong opening. It’s a better drop-off than some other previous Alien films. However, considering the positive reception to the film, it’s surprising that it dropped off so much.

The Rest Of The Box Office

In third place was It Ends With Us with brought in $11.9 million.

Blink Twice was one of the new releases this week. I predicted it would make $7 million last week and it placed fourth with $7.3 million. Considering the lack of a prominent marketing campaign. This was as good as I expected the movie to do as it also had some star power behind it.

In fifth place at the box office was the movie The Forge.

The Crow was the other new release this past weekend and it placed eighth at the box office earning only $4.6 million. The movie was tracking for a $6 million to $10 million opening; but as predicted, the movie wasn’t able to meet that tracking. Likely due to bad word of mouth and poor reviews.

Next Weekend’s New Releases And Predictions

Next week will see the release of Afraid.

Afraid is looking at bringing in $7 million to $12 million at the box office. Which is a respectable amount as the budget for the movie (while not public) is probably quite low. As this is a new horror movie starring John Cho; the actor has had some success in the genre previously. However, the actor has also had some misfires as of late. With the reboot of The Grudge burning up on impact and Cowboy Bebop not landing with audiences. The movie also hasn’t had a strong marketing campaign and the director, Chris Weitz, isn’t a known horror director. Unlike the likes of other horror movies this year that had a prominent creator at the helm. I can see this making close to $9 million. With there being little in the horror space aside from Alien: Romulus which many have already moved on from seemingly. It’ll likely place fourth.
