Trap may be the new M. Night Shyamalan movie but it couldn’t compete with two of the hottest movies of the Summer: Deadpool & Wolverine and Twisters.
The Weekend Box Office
As per Box Office Mojo, Deadpool & Wolverine maintained its lead at the box office, keeping in the number one spot with a 54% drop over last week. Even with this drop, the movie still brought in a substantial $97 million. The movie is currently at $895 million worldwide and is expected to cross the $1 billion in the next couple of weeks.
Disney itself is the first studio in 2024 to cross the $3 billion mark in worldwide ticket sales. This is due in part to Deadpool & Wolverine but also; Inside Out 2, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and The First Omen. Disney isn’t looking to stop this momentum with Alien: Romulus, Moana 2, and Mufasa: The Lion King on the docket for this year.
Twisters maintained its spot in second place with $22.7 million. The movie only lost 35% of its box office which is considerably low in terms of box office drop off. The film is showing legs in the domestic market. Whereas internationally the movie hasn’t quite found its footing.
Trap was the major new release this week. It opened to third place with $15.6 million. This is shy of the $20 million to $30 million opening the movie was tracking for. However, this lined up perfectly with my predictions where I predicted Trap would make $14 million to $16 million. I figured the movie wouldn’t be enough to compete with Twisters and Deadpool & Wolverine and that was certainly the case. While the movie was marketed modestly well, lukewarm critic reviews I think certainly dampened excitement for the movie.
The Top 5 was rounded out by Despicable Me 4 in fourth with $11.3 million. Inside Out 2 was in fifth with $6.7 million.
The other new release was Harold and the Purple Crayon which was tracking for a $10 million to $20 million opening but placed 6th with $6 million. Bad reviews and a dated IP for children (the original book came out in 1955) certainly didn’t help things.
Next Weekend’s Predictions
The two new releases next weekend are It Ends with Us and Borderlands.
It Ends with Us is tracking for a $20 million to $30 million opening weekend. This is based on a popular novel, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the movie was on the higher end of tracking especially as fans of the book may show up to see it without much in pre-sales. It certainly won’t have Blake Lively dethroning her husband at the box office but I certainly see it being in second place.
Borderlands is tracking for a $10 million to $20 million opening. It’ll likely be neck and neck with Twisters for third place and honestly, it’s too close to call but I do think Twisters will see a dropoff in the 50% range as female audience goers move to It Ends With Us which may be enough for Broderlands to take third place.
As always, we’ll find out next week!
