Hey everybody, have you heard the news? Joe Bob is back in town. This week, us Mutants got to watch a psychological horror film from the 1960’s. Joe Bob and Darcy discussed how the movie is often talked about incorrectly. With people not quite fully understanding the movie. The movie shown was Carnival of Souls.
If you’re unfamiliar, every second week on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. The former Monstervision host and his co-host Darcy The Mail Girl feature a movie; that sometimes has a timely theme (although, it’s not always necessary).
A Psychological Examination Of Carnival Of Souls
Once again there were no guests this week; although considering that this movie came out in the 1960’s that’s not too surprising and is more forgivable than usual.
The movie was a bit slow at times but really picked up at the end. It being an older movie; there were no scenes of nudity much to the chagrin of both Joe Bob and the Mutant Family. They discussed this in detail and suggested how the movie could’ve implemented nudity. I felt like they were discussing nudity because it would jolt the audience; or give you something to pay attention to. However, I felt the plot of the movie could’ve been a bit tighter. It would’ve accomplished the same result (and without nudity!).
The movie oftentimes was very well shot. You can tell the cinematographer was an old-school Hollywood great that really knew the craft. Still, the movie aims for this surrealist style; and the editing techniques didn’t quite achieve this as well as it could’ve.
Still, the great part of seeing any movie on The Last Drive-In; is that you’re given an appreciation for a movie regardless. I still don’t think this movie is a top-tier movie; but I’m glad I was shown it in the best presentation possible.
The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs airs live on Shudder every second Friday at 6pm PST / 9pm EST. If you miss the live airing, episodes are archived and posted the following Sunday.
