This weekend belonged to the minions as Despicable Me 4 took in $122 million over the July 4th weekend.

The Minions Take Over The Box Office

Despicable Me 4

As per Box Office Mojo, Despicable Me 4 brought in $122 million over the five-day Fourth of July weekend, $75 million of which was over the two-day weekend. The Despicable Me franchise has taken hold of the Fourth of July weekend as the previous two movies also made a huge splash on the long weekend, with Despicable Me 2 making $143 million over the weekend in 2013 and Despicable Me 3 making $120 million over the five-day weekend.

The movie has a $100 million budget, so it’s certainly on track to earn that back and then some.

Inside Out 2 was expected to lose its audience to Despicable Me 4, but it still came in at 2nd place at the box office. The movie earned $30 million, which is a nearly 48% drop from its previous week, The movie is still no slouch with the movie making a total of $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office.

The Rest Of The Box Office

A Quiet Place: Day One could not keep its second-place spot and slid down to third with $21 million. The movie has earned $178 million on a $67 million budget which will help ensure we see more of this franchise for years to come.

MaXXXine debuted in fourth place at the box office. It was looking to bring in $10 million but only brought in $6.7 million. Over half of which was from the opening day showings. This doesn’t bode well for the longevity of this movie. Still, it managed to out gross X‘s $4.2 million opening and Pearl‘s $3.1 million opening.

Rounding out the Top 5 at the box office was Bad Boys: Ride or Die with $6.5 million.

Next Weekend’s New Releases

Next weekend sees the release of Fly Me To The Moon and Longlegs.

There’s no available tracking for Longlegs but it’s a Neon release and those tend to make less than $10 million on opening weekend box office. I estimate it to make anywhere from $5 million to $7 million. It does have good buzz and the horror crowd is likely ready to move on from A Quiet Place: Day One.

Fly Me To The Moon is tracking for a $15 million to $20 million opening. It’s got a somewhat muted marketing campaign, and other similar space movies have done similar numbers at the box office. The star power of Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum may help push it over to $20 million.

As always, we’ll find out next week!
