Blue Beetle is making a return to the DCU with a new animated series. Deadline was first with the news that James Gunn’s upcoming DC slate will include Blue Beetle. Miguel Puga has been working on the project since early this year and will serve as showrunner. Cristian Martinez is also set as the writer for the series.
Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the director and screenwriter for the underrated 2023 Blue Beetle film, will executive produce. John Ricard will also be an EP on the film. Galen Vaisman will oversee the animated TV series for DC Studios.
Now, here’s the big question: Will the series continue from the previous film? There’s some flux with contracts and getting talent involved, but the current plan is that the series will build on the movie but divert from telling the same story. Xolo Maridueña could return to the title role.
What Is Blue Beetle?
Blue Beetle follows Jaime Reyes, a teen who finds the alien technology that turns him into a superhero. Created by Charles Wojtkowski for Fox Comics in 1939, Jaime first appeared in comic books in the high-tech alien armor in 2006.
Maridueña is shown as a recent college graduate. He returns home to figure out what he wants to do with his life. While taking a job alongside his younger sister Milagro (Belissa Escobedo), he disagrees with Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon), of the infamous Kord Industries, while defending Victoria’s beautiful niece, Jenny (Bruna Marquezine).
The Kord family drama blows up after Jaime unknowingly finds himself holding an alien scarab that has the power to turn special holders into Blue Beetle. It’s very rare for he who possesses the scarab to turn into the superhero, but it miraculously works for Jaime, thus, ruining Kord Industries’ plans for world domination. The film follows Jaime’s adventures from an unemployed Pre-Law graduate with no prospects to giving Kord the battle of a lifetime.
There’s no release date or other information about the series.
