While he placed in second last weekend, this weekend belonged to Garfield and his furry friends at the box office.
Family Friendly Fare Wins At The Box Office
As reported by Box Office Mojo, The Garfield Movie went from second place last weekend to first this weekend. This aligns with my predictions from last weekend, mostly due to Sony’s family-friendly fare usually having longer legs at the box office. All The Garfield Movie needed to do was not lose a substantial amount of its audience in the second weekend. While it did lose nearly 48% of its audience from last weekend, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga lost over 59%.
As mentioned last weekend, The Garfield Movie‘s budget is reported at $60 million; and as of this past weekend, the movie has earned $152 million worldwide. Typically with marketing and other factors you usually double the budget to include that. So in this case, Garfield has already proven to at least be profitable for Sony, and any money it makes at this point is just icing on top of the cake.
In a surprise upset, IF bounced back from 3rd to second place with $10.8 million. The movie also kept its losses low and only lost 33% of its audience over last weekend, all of his despite leaving 285 theatres. IF is still quite shy of its $220 million it would need to reach to break even (currently it’s at $138 million worldwide) but still, Paramount must be happy that it got back some momentum at this weekend’s box office.
The Rest Of The Box Office
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga dropped from first place to third. The movie earned $10.7 million, which is low considering the movie added 60 theatres over the week and weekend. It’s becoming increasingly unlikely that the movie will make back its $168 million budget. Unsurprisingly, Warner Bros. Discovery this week announced that they have canceled the next movie planned in the franchise, Mad Max: The Wasteland.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes kept in fourth place with $8.8 million, and The Fall Guy kept in fifth place with $4.2 million.
Next Weekend’s Box Office Belongs To The Bad Boys
Next weekend sees the release of Bad Boys: Ride Or Die. The movie is tracking for a $50 million to $60 million debut, which would put it around Bad Boys for Life‘s $62 million opening. The movie has a reported budget of $90 million. So it’s on track to make that back and then some. As with The Garfield Movie, don’t be too surprised if Bad Boys: Ride Or Die has some staying power at the box office. Undoubtedly it’ll be the number one movie at the box office this weekend.
It’s more than likely that next weekend will see Bad Boys: Ride Or Die poach the remaining box office life out of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga since the two are going for the same demographic; but I’d also expect some of the family-friendly fare to hold their own as they try to maximize their box office earnings before the release of Inside Out 2 in two weeks.
As always we’ll find out next week!
