Star Trek Heads Back To The Beginning Of Starfleet
Producer Simon Kinberg is moving on from X-Men and going to Star Trek.
The successful producer is in talks to produce a new Star Trek film for Paramount Pictures. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news and also stated that if the movie does well, it could lead to him taking more active creative roles for the Star Trek films. The project is already well into development with Toby Haynes (Andor) on board to direct the new feature. Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the screenplay, with a setting that’s decades before the events of the 2009 reboot done by J.J. Abrams. The details are pretty limited, but it’s said to be set near modern-day for the creation of Starfleet and humankind’s first contact with alien life.
For those that enjoyed the reboots, Abrams will be involved as a producer on the project. There’s no release date, but the word is that they’re shooting for a 2025 release date. That would be pretty wild to get an entire Star Trek movie shot, edited, and finished in a year and a half. Like Star Wars, we haven’t had a Star Trek movie in quite a long time, since 2016 with Star Trek: Beyond. The franchise has carried on with TV series like PIcard, Discovery, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds. Paramount+ has been a boon for the franchise, allowing all of the series a pretty wide audience to enjoy them.
For those that would like to see more from that Abrams crew, it’s said that Paramount still wants to do a fourth film to cap off their story, but that’s pretty far away for right now.
Kinberg started off as a producer on the X-Men franchise for Fox and even moved into directing with X-Men: Dark Phoenix. He’s done plenty of other films in his career, including The Martian and Star Wars, so he’s no stranger to space tales.
