The Matrix is quite possibly one of the most famous science fiction and cyberpunk franchises in media history. It’s pretty difficult these days to find someone who has not a single clue as to what this franchise is about. Or at the very least, has never heard of it in passing. Clearly, the Wachowskis are onto something with the franchise, despite the, er, mixed reception critics and audiences alike gave the later films.
Alas though, it seems like The Matrix franchise is now out of the Wachowskis’ hands. It looks like Warner Bros. has seen the writing on the wall there in light of the mixed reviews. How else do you explain why this upcoming new addition to the franchise features not the Wachowskis as the director, but Drew Goddard instead?
New The Matrix Film: Drew Goddard Details
The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that there’s a new The Matrix film in the works at Warner Bros., and it’s not the Wachowskis who will be directing it. Rather, the director and writer for this new entry will be Andrew Brion Hogan Goddard, also know much more simply as Drew Goddard. You may recognize his name if you’re a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, and/or Lost. He’s written for a number of episodes for all of those live-action series. However, more modern fans would recognize his name more for the fact that he created Daredevil for Netflix.
With that filmography under his belt, it seems like this newest The Matrix film is in good hands here. Hopefully. Assuming that Bad Times at the El Royale was just a stroke of bad luck. Fortunately though, Warner Bros. seem to have high hopes for this film, as evidenced by their words on the matter below:
Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making his new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.

The Wachowskis Still Got It
Fortunately, Warner Bros. didn’t entirely cut the Wachowskis out of the production. Lana Wachowski will be an executive producer for this new The Matrix film. Alas, that’s all the news we have on it for now. Details of this film are a bit scarce at the moment. We’ll just have to wait for Warner Bros. to get back to us on that later.
Tune back in to THS to find out more about this upcoming The Matrix film when we do.
