The long-running sci-fi series will officially return this spring, with a new leading Time Lord and a familiar showrunner. Russell T. Davies, who oversaw the first era of Doctor Who’s revival when the series initially returned in 2005, returns as showrunner for the upcoming season. Which, for the record, is now being billed as “season 1”… again.
Speaking of timey-wimey numbering, the new season will officially launch Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor. Gatwa made his debut appearance as the character in the final 60th anniversary special opposite David Tennant; later, he lead 2023’s Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road,” which also introduced his companion for the upcoming season, Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday.
According to Disney, who will distribute the BBC series in the US, the new season will travel “from the Regency era to war-torn futures”. It will also see the return of a few familiar characters, including Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Bonnie Langford as Melanie Bush.
“At last, it’s my great delight to unleash a whole new season of the Doctor and Ruby’s adventures together,” said Davies. “Monsters! Chases! Villains! Mysteries! And a terrifying secret that’s been spanning time and space for decades. Don’t miss a second!”
Doctor Who will get a two-episode premiere on Disney+ Friday, May 10 at 7pm EST. The episodes will simultaneously release on BBC iPlayer in the UK, followed by a linear debut on BBC One later that day.
