In a repeat of last week, Kung Fu Panda 4 once again took the top spot at the box office this weekend; narrowly beating out Dune: Part Two.
Tight Race For The Top Spot At The Box Office
As per Box Office Mojo, it was a tight race for the number one spot. Kung Fu Panda 4 narrowly beat Dune: Part 2, earning $30 million this past weekend. Kung Fu Panda 4 dropped 48% over last weekend, but still narrowly beat Dune: Part 2. The sci-fi epic also dropped 37% but made $29.1 million. Just narrowly missing the top spot at the box office.
Still, Dune: Part Two is no slouch at the box office. The movie is set to cross the $500 million mark this week. This will make it one of the few post-pandemic films to make that much. Even with some other notable titles coming later this year, the movie seems poised to be one of the top-earning films this year at the box office.
The rest of the box office saw Arthur the King debut in third place as I predicted. Imaginary dropped from third place to fourth with $5.6 million, and Caprini dropped from fourth place to fifth. Even though it didn’t crack the top five, Love Lies Bleeding made an impressive 1,548% increase as it opened in 1,357 more theatres. A huge jump for a movie with strong critical buzz; even if it wasn’t enough to crack the top five.
Next Weekend’s Newcomers
Next weekend sees the release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire; which is set to earn $35M-$49M next weekend, which will likely place it in first. It does face competition from Kung Fu Panda 4, but it’s been two weeks since that’s been in theatres and families will likely be looking for a break.
Immaculate is also another new release, but it likely will make $4-$6 million and may not even break the top five. The distributor, Neon, does very little to promote their movies in North America.
The Boy and the Heron and Luca are both seeing theatrical re-releases. But likely won’t impact the box office much.
As always we’ll find out next week!
