In a highly unusual situation that looks like it might be a bit murky, Marvel and Beau DeMayo have parted ways ahead of the premiere of X-Men ’97. The Hollywood Reporter had the news that DeMayo and Marvel have gone their separate ways. It’s strange because of the timing. Usually a writer leaving a studio before a movie comes out isn’t abnormal, they move on to their next project. But here, the circumstances and way seems a bit strange. The series has a Hollywood premiere tomorrow, March 13th. DeMayo had already written a second season of the show and had ideas on the way for a third.
Marvel had no comment and neither did DeMayo’s representation at the current moment.
X-Men 97 debuts on Disney+ on March 20th, 2024. DeMayo was hired in November 2021 to write the series. He was normally posting copious amounts on social media about the X-Men and the series, but his feed has been silent as of late, and he deleted his Twitter/X account in May 2023.
X-Men ’97 follows the events of X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran on Fox from 1992-1997. It’s a formative series for many fans out there, giving the best of the best X-Men story arcs in a highly digestible manner. The series is credited with introducing a generation or more of fans to the characters. It wouldn’t be out of line to say that the series was a precursor to the comic book movie/TV boom we’re in right now.
This is a developing story and we’ll keep you updated as we get more news.
