In what many thought would be the same Box Office rankings as last week, The Beekeeper overtook Mean Girls in the top spot.

A Buzz At The Box Office

The Beekeeper

As per Box Office Mojo, while Mean Girls was in the number one spot for the last two weeks, this weekend it dropped 37% down to second place with $7.3 Million. Comparatively, The Beekeeper dropped only 13.7% over its last weekend earnings and brought in $7.4 Million. This lower dropoff can likely be attributed to strong word of mouth regarding the movie. It could also change based on Sunday’s final tallies as Sunday saw two NFL games which would keep The Beekeeper‘s demographic of males at home. So this could still go to The Plastics.

Regardless of who wins, this is an overall low box office earnings. This is now the second week without a new major release. This trend will likely continue as the industry will likely see large open gaps in the schedule as studios recover from the various strikes. As an example of this affecting the box office, Feb 2nd sees the release of Argylle, and two weeks later is the release of both Madame Web and Bob Marley: One Love.

The rest of the box office mirrored last week’s considerably. Wonka was third with $5.9 Million. Migration was fourth with $5.1 Million, and Anyone But You was fifth with $4.8 Million.

Two lesser talked about success stories were Poor Things which saw a wider release and increased box office revenue by 43% with $3 Million in the 6th place spot. Godzilla Minue One was in 1500 more theatres and increased 275% with $2.6 Million.

Next Weekend

Argylle

As mentioned earlier, Argylle is the big release this coming week. It has minimal competition for the male demographic. There will be no NFL games as preparations are made for the Superbowl. Matthew Vaughn also has a good amount of box office success with Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and the Kingsmen series. That being said, the buzz on this movie seems low with little to no marketing on social media promoting the film’s release. It’s projected to make $20-$30 Million next weekend, and it’ll likely be on the lower end closer to $20 Million. Word of mouth from reviews will likely influence whether people see it or not. There’s also the factor that it’s an Apple Films release, so those who are patient enough can view it at home on Apple TV.

As always we’ll find out next week!
