Universal Pictures has released the trailer for Dev Patel‘s Monkey Man. Written and directed by Patel and co-written by Paul Angunawela and John Collee, based on a story written by Patel; the film stars the Slumdog Millionaire actor as Kid, with Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher and RRR’s Makarand Deshpande.

The film was initially set to release on Netflix, with the streamer acquiring the film through a hot $30 million package after production on the feature had wrapped in 2021, with little to no word on the movie’s development beyond that. However, executive producer Jordan Peele, who was so taken aback by Patel‘s film after seeing it, shipped it over to Universal after the filmmaker penned an overall deal between his production company, Monkeypaw Productions, and the studio. This gives Monkey Man the theatrical release it certainly deserves, as Netflix would’ve likely dumped it on the service with little to no fanfare.

Beyond Peele, Patel will also be producing the film alongside Jomon Thomas, Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christine Haebler, and Anjay Nagpal, with Jonathan Fuhrman, Natalya Pavchinskya, Aaron L. Gilbert, Andria Spring, Alison-Jane Roney and Steven Thibault acting as executive producers.

Monkey Man Plot Synopsis

Here is the plot synopsis of Monkey Man, courtesy of Universal Pictures:

“Oscar® nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) achieves an astonishing, tour-de-force feature directing debut with an action thriller about one man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless.

Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.

After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and his screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World).”
