Margot Robbie has played Harley Quinn in three films; 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad. In a new interview with Variety going over her career and the production company LuckyChap; she was asked if there’s more Harley in her future.
Are you hanging up Harley’s bat now that Lady Gaga is playing the character in the upcoming “Joker: Folie à Deux”?
ROBBIE: I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, “What are they going to do with her?” The options are endless.
The answer she gave didn’t really answer the question, and it also seems like it’s closing the door on a return to Harley Quinn for James Gunn’s upcoming DCU. It is true that we’re getting a version of Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker: Folie A Deux, but it’ll likely be a radical change from Robbie’s portrayal of the character.
Her run with the character came at one of the most tumultuous times for the DC film brand. She played Harley through multiple heads of the studio and through all the various controversies involving 2017’s Justice League and the controversies that plagued 2016’s Suicide Squad.
It’s a shame that Birds of Prey came out right as the COVID-19 pandemic was starting. That movie deserves a second look from comic book fans. Of course, 2021’s Suicide Squad from James Gunn was deservedly seen as one of the best comic book movies of that year.
Is Margot Robbie Really Done As Harley Quinn?
While this isn’t an official confirmation from her about not returning to the role; James Gunn and Peter Safran are pretty dead set on rebooting most of, if not all, of the DCU. Now, we’ve seen previous actors like Viola Davis return as characters they previously played. But by and large, the majority of the characters will be recast. Fans were pumped when Margot Robbie was cast as Harley. She’s gone on to become one of the most treasured and fan-favorite DC characters since her run started in 2016. One can hope that we’ve got at least one more run with her in a Gotham City Sirens movie of some sort, but we’ll really have to see.
James Gunn and Peter Safran didn’t mention anything about Harley Quinn in their big presentation going over the DC Films schedule for Part 1 of the timeline. With Matt Reeves working on his own “elseworld” story with The Batman 2; we could see other elseworld stories that include Margot Robbie’s Harley. That might be the best way to go about it; to give her one last run before someone else takes over.
We’ll have to see how this all develops when we get more news about the DCU. The first official film in the timeline is Superman: Legacy which releases in theaters July 11th, 2025.
