Some wonderful witchy news for you ahead of Halloween… A fan-favorite character from Hocus Pocus 2 may reappear in the upcoming third feature.
Screenwriter Jen D’Angelo recently discussed the Hocus Pocus franchise with Entertainment Weekly. D’Angelo wrote the sequel film and has been tapped by Disney to pen Hocus Pocus 3 as well. She hinted that in addition to seeing the Sanderson sisters themselves return, she hopes the next film will also bring back another witch.
“We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s Mother Witch,” D’Angelo teased.
Waddingham makes a brief but impactful appearance in Hocus Pocus 2 as the Witch Mother. She gives the Sanderson sisters their iconic spellbook, setting them on their magical life path.
In the original Hocus Pocus film, the Sandersons make several references and tributes to “mother.” Since the Witch Mother and the young Sandersons only appear at the start of the sequel to set up the story, we don’t see if their lives become more entwined. But D’Angelo thinks they do.
“I believe that she’s that mother, that she is the scorpion pie mother, and that they had a much more significant relationship with her than we’ve yet to see,” D’Angelo said. “But, maybe we will see.”
It’s Just A Bunch Of Hocus Pocus
Although it’s fun to speculate (dream?) about what Hocus Pocus 3 has in store, D’Angelo was clear in her discussion with EW that the film doesn’t have any plotlines set in stone just yet.
“We’re still in the story phase, we’re still working on it,” D’Angelo said. “We’ve been working on some ideas, and it’s been fun to dive back into that world and we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore.”
In other words, it’s still early days. So, the Witch Mother’s return isn’t guaranteed. Still, the fact that the Hocus Pocus 3 writer recognizes that the character was loved by fans and is interested in expanding her story is promising for those hoping Waddingham makes her witchy return.
So, what do you think? Are you rooting for more witchy Waddingham and Sanderson sister lore in Hocus Pocus 3? Let us know in the comments below.
