Star Trek: Prodigy has had a long and troubled broadcast and production history thus far. First, Nickelodeon announced that they were going to stream this particular Star Trek animated series. Given that, you know, they’re the ones who ordered its production in January 2019? Then suddenly and very strangely in February 2021, Paramount+ announced that they were going to stream this series first before Nickelodeon themselves. With zero explanation for the sudden change in streaming platform to boot.
Fortunately, Paramount+ did in fact stream Star Trek: Prodigy starting on October 28, 2021; with Nickelodeon following suit on December 17, 2021. It seemed like the drama was over, right? Unfortunately, Paramount+ then introduced a whole bunch of new drama in June 2023 when they suddenly announced that they were cancelling the series. Even while in the middle of production for season 2. Not only that, but they would even remove the series entirely from the streaming platform. All as part of the same “cost-cutting content write-down” that the streaming industry seems obsessed with lately.
Thus, Star Trek: Prodigy simply fell into limbo. With no one to fund production and all revenue ceased after its Paramount+ removal. Fortunately (and surprisingly), Netflix is here to save the day.
Star Trek: Prodigy on Netflix: Details
Netflix (via Deadline) is proud to announce that they are picking up Star Trek: Prodigy after its Paramount+ cancellation. Netflix confirms that the first season of this animated Star Trek series will arrive on the sreaming platform sometime later in 2023. They don’t mention exactly when though. We’ll just have to wait for Netflix to tell us that later.
It’s not just the first season though. Netflix also wants to stream Star Trek: Prodigy season 2…whenever they actually finish producing it. See, Netflix has actually picked up the unfinished production for the second season as well. Netflix plans to release it sometime next year in 2024. Alas, that’s it as far as release windows go. Again, Netflix will have to specify that release window for us later. Tune back in to THS to find that out when we do.
