It would appear that Disney’s live-action adaptation of their own The Little Mermaid is repeating its success at the theatrical box office on the streaming scene. Despite the mixed reviews critics gave and are in the process of giving it, I might add. How else do you explain how well this live-action adaptation is doing on Disney+?

The Little Mermaid (2023) Swimming Merrily into Disney+: Details

The Little Mermaid (2023) key visual.
I’m still not a fan of those realistic fish and assorted sea life talking.

On September 6, 2023; Disney’s live-action adaptation/remake of their own The Little Mermaid film started streaming on Disney+. Just a little over 3 months after it made its debut in US theaters on May 26, 2023.

To commemorate this: Disney just released some interesting statistics about The Little Mermaid. According to them, this particular Disney live-action adaptation broke records on Disney+ as one of the most-streamed films on the streaming platform since Hocus Pocus 2 back in September 30, 2022. Apparently, live-action Ariel (played by Halle Bailey) managed to get 16 million people viewing her film, and just in the first 5 days after her streaming debut to boot.

I guess even the 67% critics gave The Little Mermaid on Rotten Tomatoes isn’t enough to bring Ariel down. At least part of the reason is the high score audiences gave Ariel’s performance. Apparently, the average moviegoer gives live-action Ariel 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. So whatever this Disney live-action adaptation lacks in overall performance, it seems to make up for in mass market appeal. Oh, and its catchy songs. Say what you will about Disney films. At least their music is consistently good.

Are you curious about said music? Or perhaps you want to see if the average audience member is right about this Disney live-action adaptation? Then you can watch The Little Mermaid on Disney+ right now. The only thing though is that you do need a paid subscription to watch it though.
