Shiny hot pink beats red and blue this time.

Variety has just announced that Barbie has just shot past The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the highest-grossing film of 2023, domestically speaking here in North America. Okay, so maybe “shot past” might be a bit of a stretch. In Mario Kart terms, this would be the equivalent of our hot pink plastic heroine edging past our mustachioed Italian plumber to just reach first place, but with a very narrow lead.

According to Variety, Barbie managed to earn a whopping $575.4 million USD at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is just barely behind Greta Gerwig’s surprise cinematic masterpiece at $574 million USD at the same. It’s a difference of only $1.4 million USD, but it’s enough to secure Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) and Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) the lead in this revenue race.

That domestic gross might even be enough to secure our plastic duo the ultimate win at the box office to boot. Variety mentions globally, Barbie managed to gross $1.3 billion USD. That’s only $500 million USD less than The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which as of this writing has grossed $1.35 billion USD at the global box office. At the rate Barbie keeps earning money, she might very well beat Mario on the global stage in addition to the domestic stage. Only time will tell at this point. Tune back in to THS to find out if Barbie clutches the win there when we do.
