Fans of that old Batman: The Animated Series from the 90’s might recall Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Heck, fans of DC animated films in general might recall it. It was the very first animated film Warner Bros. Animation made before they became Warner Bros. Feature Animation…and then before they folded back into and merged back with Warner Bros. Animation back in 2004. However, just because Warner Bros. Feature Animation no longer exists doesn’t erase the fact that Mask of the Phantasm is still an animated masterpiece even nearly 20 years after its theatrical debut. Don’t believe me? Then how else do you explain why it’s getting a 4K remaster?

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm ~ 4K Release Details

Complete with that gorgeous retro animation.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is proud to announce that they’re going to bring a 4K remaster of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm to home video. How? Well, according to them, they sourced the “1993 Original Cut Camera Negative” in order to scan them at 4K resolution. They then applied digital restoration to the footage in order to remove “dirt, scratches, and additional anomalies”, but took special care not to “touch the film grain or the animation cel dirt that was part of the original artwork”. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like dedication there on the restorers’ part.

As for this home video release? Well, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment also reveals that this 4K remaster of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm will come with a featurette video called Kevin Conroy: I Am The Knight as part of its special features, paying tribute to the late Kevin Conroy himself. There will even be a bonus episode of Justice League: Unlimited featuring a cameo from Phatasm as part of said special features.

As for when you can see this 4K remaster of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm for yourself? Well, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment reveals that this 4K remaster will make its home video debut on September 12, 2023. The digital version will be available for $14.99, while the 4K Ultra HD + Digital Version will be for $33.99 (or $39.99 CAD). You can preorder it right now from distributors like Amazon.
