It appears that Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece is soon going to make its global premiere. It would certainly explain why Netflix want to hype it up so badly. How so, you might ask? Well, mostly by announcing that the original Japanese voice cast will reprise their roles from the original anime via dubbing over the English lines. Don’t believe me? Then why not check out Netflix’s announcement trailer for that dub, and see which voice you like better for yourself?
One Piece: The Return of the Japanese Voice Cast
At Anime Expo 2023, Netflix made a remarkable announcement about their live-action adaptation of the One Piece anime and manga by Eiichiro Oda via that announcement trailer above on YouTube. As you can see, said trailer features the voice actors for both versions of Monkey D. Luffy. Iñaki Godoy is right there in the trailer greeting Mayumi Tanaka as the two of them bond over Luffy’s adventures. You have to admit, it really does seem like Iñaki Godoy feels no small amount of excitement for this adaptation, given how much energy he’s pouring into this announcement.
Said announcement by the way, reveals that the original Japanese voice cast for the entirety of the Straw Hat Pirates will voice them in this live-action One Piece adaptation. At least, for the Japanese dub of this live-action series. Even then, it’s only for the Straw Hats who will show up in this adaptation. Still, it’ll be nice to hear how the original Japanese voice cast will change this adaptation.
Fortunately, we won’t have long to wait to see it. This announcement trailer reveals that Netflix’s One Piece will make its global debut on August 31, 2023. As you might expect, it’s a Netflix exclusive. Thus, you will need a paid Netflix subscription to watch it.
