We follow the journey of our main character, Cootie (played by Jharell Jerome). He is a young black man, naive to the world… and just so happens to be 13 feet tall! Cootie was raised in secrecy since birth. For the first time, he is navigating life on the “outside” as an independent adult. Despite the constant worries and concerns from his parents; Cootie is able to build friendships, explore his community, form his own opinions, and even fall in love.

One of the most significant aspects of the show is the inclusion of socio-political themes and punchlines. Boots Riley uses his platform to bring awareness to topics such as racial inequities, the usage of black culture/art as a tool, and the impact of community on black men (both negative and positive). Viewers have a lot to think about long after the show ends.

Visually, the series is absolutely stunning! With fantastical cinematography (Steve Annis and Eric Moynier) that transports viewers into this magical world of Cootie and his friends. From the lighting, set, and costume design to special effects; all of these elements combine to create a unique and immersive experience.

The characters are compelling, adding to their uniqueness; they are well-developed and bring the story to life, which makes it easy for viewers to connect and relate. Cootie’s journey is about finding his place in the world, the people he meets, and his experiences along the way.
