Universal Pictures is looking to one of its most popular horror movies from last year to cast the upcoming How To Train Your Dragon live-action film. The star of The Black Phone, Mason Thames, has been cast as Hiccup in the upcoming film. In addition to that, The Last Of Us‘ Nico Parker is joining the cast as Astrid. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the two are joining the upcoming Dean DeBlois-directed film.
Universal has dated the upcoming feature for March 14th, 2025. It’ll start production this Summer.
The original How To Train Your Dragon films are among the most popular and highest-grossing animated films ever. They’re based on the books by Cressida Cowell. Those works focused on the special friendship between a young Viking boy named Hiccup and Toothless, an injured dragon he nurses back to health.
Astrid evolves throughout the series from someone who initially hates dragons to someone who gets her own. She also starts off as an adversary for HIccup and grows into a friend and partner. In the original animated films, Jay Baruchel voiced HIccup, and America Ferrera voiced Astrid.
The search for actors who could grow with the roles over time was long and arduous, but the studio found these two to be the best choices. The movies are unique because they don’t happen one after another. The characters grow along with the audience watching.
DeBlois is writing the film as well. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are producing the film.
