Once more, with feeling. In a fairly unsurprising turn of events, Marvel’s latest, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 maintained its lead at the weekend box office; with very few challenges from new releases, the film maintained a healthy lead.
Retaining Its Audience
Compared to other recent Marvel movies, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3‘s box office saw a comparatively low drop-off in its second week. As per Box Office Mojo, The film only saw a 48.9% drop-off, bringing in $60.5M in the domestic box office, bringing it to a total of $475M for the worldwide box office. For comparison, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a 69% drop in its second week, and Thor: Love and Thunder had a 67% drop.
In our review of the movie, reviewer Hunter Bolding said:
This is a film heavy with emotional beats that might be too much for some viewers, but it’s backed up with so much charm, love, and care for these characters. James Gunn doesn’t miss and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ends up as a triumphant entry in the series.
Super Mario Still Going Strong
The Super Mario Bros. came in second place, bringing in $13M. Book Club: The Next Chapter was the only new movie out in theatres this week and it debuted in third place with $6.5M. In our review of the movie, reviewer Jessica Lancaster said:
Look, Book Club: The Next Chapter may not be the kind of film that’s going to win an Oscar, but it’s got an undeniable (though cheesy) sort of charm. Even when the story cuts corners or a joke doesn’t land, you give it a little grace. It’s the definition of a feel-good movie: easy to watch, with a guaranteed happy ending for everyone. Actually, relaxed from its “Book Club” premise, I even enjoyed The Next Chapter more than the original film. Grab your girlfriends and the wine, and you’re in for a good time.
Evil Dead Rise took fourth place with $3.7M. Although that was undoubtedly impacted by the movie releasing on digital.
Next week sees the release of Fast X so we’ll have to see how much that impacts Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 at the box office.
