In between shooting the second season of The Last Of Us, it looks like Pedro Pascal is joining the upcoming sequel to Gladiator. Deadline reports that Pascal is in final negotiations to join the untitled sequel to Gladiator. He’s joined by Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. Ridley Scott is in the director’s chair.
The sequel follows the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator which starred Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. That film grossed over $460 million at the box office on its way to 12 Academy Award nominations including a win for Best Picture. Scott will also produce, along with Scott Free President Michael Pruss as well as Doug Wick & Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. David Scarpa wrote the screenplay. Crew returning from the first film include John Mathieson (Director of Photography), Arthur Max (Production Designer), and Janty Yates (Costume Design).
The film has a tentative release date of November 22nd, 2024.
Pascal made his name on Game of Thrones and used that popularity to get the main role in The Mandalorian. That stardom blossomed when The Last Of Us was released earlier this year and became one of the most popular shows in HBO’s history. They’re trying to get a second season off the ground, but that gap gave Pascal an opportunity to do this film.
He can be seen in the upcoming film Strange Way Of Life, which premieres later this year at the Canne Film Festival. It stars Ethan Hawke and comes from Director Pedro Almodovar. He’ll also star in the upcoming Ethan Coen film, Drive Away Dolls. That film releases in September 2023.
We’ll have to see how Gladiator 2 turns out when it releases in theaters next year.
