Faces of Death might be one of the most infamous films of all time. It was released in theaters back in 1978 and showcased a pathologist exploring the worst ways to die. Faces of Death played it off like this was real footage, but most of it was staged. It was heralded as being banned in 52 countries and took off once home video took over in the 80s. Now, Legendary Pictures is remaking the film for the 21st century with stars Barbie Ferreira from Euphoria and Dacre Montgomery from Stranger Things.

That cult status makes Faces of Death a prime target for a remake these days. Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber are writing and directing, respectively. They’re behind Cam and How To Blow Up A Pipeline.

Here’s what they had to say in a joint statement.

Faces of Death was one of the first viral video tapes, and we are so lucky to be able to use it as a jumping off point for this exploration of cycles of violence and the way they perpetuate themselves online.

It’s unknown what roles Ferreira and Montgomery will play in the film. That explanation about viral video these days is an interesting exploration for the horror genre. These days, tapes don’t go viral, but videos on TikTok do. We’ll have to see how the film turns out.
