Sony Pictures is trying to follow in the footsteps of Paramount’s successful revival of the Scream franchise with I Know What You Did Last Summer. Deadline is reporting that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has been chosen to direct the sequel with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to reprise their roles. Leak McKendrick is on board to write the script.
The original film came out in the ’90s amid a new slasher movie boom started by Scream. It follows four young friends who witnessed a tragic accident and are reunited when they’re stalked by a hook-wielding maniac. The original film launched the careers of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe. It also spawned multiple sequels but the franchise has been dormant on the big screen since 2006. There was a series that aired on Prime Video titled I Know What You Did Last Summer that ran for one season.
Robinson and McKendrick had a pitch for Sony executives that they couldn’t pass up, and tell us if it sounds familiar. They bring back original cast members to draw in old-school fans of the franchise while adding fresh faces to relaunch the series. Robinson recently directed Do Revenge for Netflix, which had plenty of homage to ’90s thrillers and horror movies.
As for other cast members that could return, there’s no information about that. The film is still in early development and we’ll keep you updated on any news as it breaks.
