It’s been a long time coming for Tobe Hooper‘s seminal classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to get a proper 4K UHD restoration and release. Now, Dark Sky Films is releasing a brand-new 4K UHD version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre on February 28th, 2023.
It was, and remains, one of the most controversial films ever released. It showed a shockingly realistic depiction of a murderous family in the Texas outskirts. Tobe Hooper showed that horror movies could be terrifying and immensely well-shot. The belief that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre should be seen in the crappiest quality possible goes out the window if you actually watch the movie.
For the first time ever, the director-approved 4K restoration of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre comes to UHD. According to Dark Sky Films, “this is The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as it has never been seen or heard before“. The film stars Marilyn Burns, Allen Danzinger, Paul A. Partain, William Vail, and Teri McMinn. It also stars Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface. Upon its initial release in 1974, TCM was banned in several countries, but that didn’t stop the low-budget film from grossing over $30 million domestically. It’s now regarded as one of the best and most influential horror movies ever.
