Amazon Studios has greenlit a series based on the PlayStation game series God Of War. According to sources, The Wheel Of Time‘s Rafe Judkins will be the showrunner and Oscar nominees Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are writing and executive producing the series.
Amazon Studios are producing the show in association with Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions.
Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios had this to say about the project.
God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling. We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and [game developer] Santa Monica Studio.
If you don’t know, God Of War follows Kratos, the God of War who sets out to get revenge on the other gods of the Greek pantheon. He then goes to the Norse realm of Midgard and sets off on a quest when his wife dies and leaves him with a young son. His wife’s final wish is to have her ashes spread from the highest peak.
The series started in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 with God of War and continues to this day with the release of God Of War Ragnarok this year. Sony Pictures TV President Katharine Pope had this to say.
We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series. Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos.
It joins a list of high-profile adaptations to the screen for Sony PlayStation properties like The Last Of Us, Twisted Metal, and Uncharted.
