Scanners getting new life at HBO Max. After a tumultuous period of jettisoning projects left and right, it seems like HBO Max might be back to creating new content. David Cronenberg‘s 1981 cult classic Scanners is getting an HBO series. THR is reporting that the film is getting a new series from writer William Bridges (Black Mirror) and director Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country).

If you’ve never seen Scanners, the film is about a group of people who have psychic, telepathic, and telekinetic powers. These people are called scanners and are led by a madman named Revok, played by Michael Ironside. It was the first mainstream success for Cronenberg and set him off on a career filled with horror and then more art house affairs.

Here’s how THR described the plot of the series:

The series is being described as a visceral thriller set in the mind-bending world of Cronenberg’s film. It will focus on two women living on the fringes of modern society who are pursued by relentless agents with unimaginable powers and thus must learn to work together to topple a vast conspiracy determined to bring them to heel.

Cronenberg will serve as an Executive Producer on the series. It has no release date and will air on HBO.
