Today fans of the Blade Runner franchise got some exciting news. A new limited series sequel is making its way to Prime Video. This new series, Blade Runner 2099, will be set 50 years after the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049. Another piece of welcome news is Ridley Scott, who directed the original 1982 film, is on-board as executive producer.

BLADE RUNNER 2099

At this time, there is no information on the plot or casting for the new series. The only thing we know, thanks to the title is it takes place in 2099, which places it 80 years after the 2019 setting of the original film. In addition to Scott who is producing under Scott Free Production, Silka Luisa will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Michael Green, who co-wrote Blade Runner 2049 will also be an executive producer. Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, co-founders of Alcon Entertainment, who acquired the rights to the Blade Runner franchise in 2011 are also executive producers. Alcon Entertainment has more recently produced the anime seires Blade Runner: Black Lotus

“We are delighted to continue our working relationship with our friends at Amazon,” Kosove and Johnson said. “And we are beyond excited to continue to extend the ‘Blade Runner’ canon into a new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka has created. Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for ‘Blade Runner’ 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time. Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ then became one of the best reviewed sequels of all time. So, we recognize that we have a very high bar to meet with this next installment. Together with Silka and our partners at Amazon, and Scott Free Productions, we hope that we can live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of ‘Blade Runner.’”
