The award-winning documentary This Is GWAR is heading to Shudder. The horror streaming service has acquired the documentary chronicling the 30-plus-year career of GWAR. For the uninitiated, GWAR is known for its grotesque costumed characters and blood (and other bodily fluid) soaked stage shows. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, and won the 2021 Audience Award. It’ll exclusively stream on Shudder in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand on Thursday, July 21st.
Shudder General Manager Craig Engler had this to say about the documentary:
For more than three decades, GWAR has set the standard for heavy metal horror with larger-than-life personas and gore-filled stage shows that were unlike anything anyone had ever seen. But even their most ardent fans have never seen them like this, as the band and director Scott Barber reveal in moving detail the literal blood, sweat and tears that have made GWAR the true legends they are today.
Through interviews with the humans that fought to keep GWAR alive and their contemporaries, This Is Gwar gives insight that fans have never seen. It includes interviews from Weird Al Yankovic, Thomas Lennon, Alex Winter, Bam Margera, and Ethan Embry, including never seen footage of legendary GWAR frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus). This is GWAR was directed by Scott Barber.
We’ll just have to see how much blood and guts are spilled in the documentary when it releases this July. \
