Has it really been 20 years since the first Kingdom Hearts game launched? Well, considering that it is, it’s not surprising that they’re unveiling a host of new games for the franchise, including the long-awaited 4th game in the main series. Don’t believe me? Then you can check out the trailer for yourself below:
Keyblades, Keyblades Everywhere!
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the original game all the way back in 2002, the official Kingdom Hearts YouTube channel has recently released an announcement trailer for several new games in the franchise. 3, to be precise. This nearly 8-minute long trailer is actually 3 trailers in 1. The first trailer is for a mobile game called Kingdom Hearts Union X Dark Road. This will be a role-playing browser game for Android and iOS, and features a story that serves as a prequel to the Kingdom Hearts series as a whole. According to the trailer, the game will launch in August 2022 for free. If you’re a fan of the series and its extensive lore, this might be the browser/mobile game for you.
The second trailer is for yet another mobile game called Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. However, unlike the 2D-only Union X Dark Road, Missing-Link will apparently feature a fully 3D environment set in a seemingly empty city. This mobile game will be for Android and iOS, and will enter a closed beta test in specific (but unspecified) regions sometime in 2022. They don’t give any more precise date for this though. That’s something we’ll have to wait for from Kingdom Hearts at a later date.
Kingdom Hearts 4 at Long Last?!
The third and final trailer in this 20th-anniversary trailer though is for the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts 4. This trailer shows some very high-quality graphics that appear to be on the level of the next-gen consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series S/X. It even shows off some of the story and gameplay. In this trailer, we see Sora waking up in an apartment overlooking a bustling city, receiving a bit of exposition from an unnamed female character, and then watching as a massive Heartless suddenly appears in the city and attacks bystanders. The trailer transitions from a purely cinematic scene into what looks like actual gameplay footage, complete with health bars, experience bars, and a command list.
Unfortunately, this Kingdom Heart 4 trailer gives no release date for this latest addition to the mainline game series. Not even a release year. It’ll probably be a while before we can play this game. How long that will be up to Disney and Square Enix to decide. However, the very end of the trailer does give us a scene of Donald (who is just as lovably incomprehensible in Japanese as he is in English) and Goofy searching for the lost Sora, and encountering a mysterious blue flame that apparently terrifies them. What does this mean? Well, we’re going to have to be patient for that.
