It’s been three decades since Gremlins 2 took our screens by storm. Now, the endearingly terrifying little guys are back in a new animated series, Gremlins: Secrets of Mogwai.
Produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros., the prequel will make its debut at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 13. In anticipation of the premiere, Variety obtained the official synopsis for the series. Check it out below:
A period piece set in 1920s Shanghai, Gremlins: Secrets of Mogwai reveals how a 10-year-old Sam Wing – who becomes the future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie – met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. They strike up a lifelong friendship as Wing attempts to return Gizmo to his family, encountering and sometimes battling colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. Meanwhile, the two and street thief Elle are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
The series comes from Tze Chun (founder of TKO Studios), who serves as writer and showrunner. Brendan Hay (Star Wars Detours) serves as co-showrunner and executive producer.
The voices behind the upcoming Gremlins series include:
- Ming Na-Wen as Fong Wing
- BD Wong as Hon Wing
- James Hong as Grandpa Wing
- Izaac Wang as Sam Wing
- A.J. LoCascio as Gizmo
- Gabrielle Green as Elle
- Matthew Rhys as Riley Greene
The series does not yet have an official air date. However, WB plans to release Gremlins: Secrets of Mogwai on both Cartoon Network and HBO Max.
The studio’s release plan, combined with the animation style revealed in the first look above, has led many to speculate this Gremlins series may be more kid-friendly than the feature film versions.
